Our quick and mind-blowing taste of Marrakech

Hello from Morocco! Let’s talk about our brief time in Marrakech that was, in true Megan and Mike-style, all about what to eat in Morocco! I’ll let Mike take it from here, using his words and photos…

Full and happy, in the middl of the Jemaa el-Fnaa

Full and happy, in the middl of the Jemaa el-Fnaa

After our seven hour flight from New York to Casablanca, Megan slept on a couch in the lounge with her head in my lap, as I balanced my laptop on one leg and looked up the pronunciation of “Djemaa el-Fna.” Then we took a quick flight to Marrakech.

For those curious, neither of us slept much on our flights, but now we can relax a bit in our hotel, before Megan gets dental work at Djemaa el-Fna square!! Time to look up how to pronounce “can that monkey drill a cavity out?”

Because we all know how much I love dentists.

Because we all know how much Megan loves dentists.

I’ll tell you about our amazing hotel (the El Fenn) at some other point – but here’s a pic of our room…

The Golden Latte: The most “LA” cure for a cold

my favorite cure for a coldI’m so not a “trendy juice bar” or “natural herb remedy” person. But I partook of both the other day, and it might have made me a convert…

I came down with a cold and sore throat almost overnight. It seems to be going around. My friend Kimmy, who had it last week, told me to “get thee to this miracle remedy.” She’d been raving about it recently, when it cured her awful cold symptoms while she was on set for a styling gig. It didn’t totally cure her right away, but almost immediately it enabled her to continue working as if she were a normal functioning human.

The fastest way to get those miracle pills into my body was to go pick up a bottle from our nearby Erewhon Market. While we were there, Mike forced me to get some kind of wellness drink at their “Tonic and Juice Bar.” He told the bearded and beanied barista, “she has a cold with a sore throat.” And he immediately he recommended “The Golden Latte.”

I took the Kimmy-recommended four Nucleo Immune tablets while I was waiting for the mystery tonic. And then I met The Golden Latte!

Gaze up on the glory of The Golden Latte

I don’t know if it was the one-two-punch of both the “miracle pills” and the “tonic,” but 15 minutes later, just in time for lunch, I was feeling high. But, like, a good high — a body high with a dreamy light headedness — and my throat was no longer hurting.

As I was explaining what a Golden Latte was to my folks — while we were waiting to order at a super-hip, celebrity-riddled, Australian coffee-shop-and-restaurant — our super-cute server chimed in, “Oh, The Golden Latte? I love that. It’s amazing. Sorry, I just had to chime in when I heard you mention it.”

(I told you this was the most LA cure for the cold EVAR!)

Obsessed with this thing, I began Googling “Golden Latte Erewhon” to see if I could learn what about it or why it was making me feel better. I found this description on Clean Plates:

Vanilla French toast waffles: For people who hate french toast and cinnamon

french toast waffles

My love for waffles is directly proportionate to my hatred of French toast. Since the very first bite I ever had of French toast in childhood — made by my friend’s dad WHO WAS FUCKING FRENCH — I’ve thought it was gross. And it doesn’t make sense, because French toast is just about everything I love — bread, eggs, sugar, syrup! WTF.

My theory: What if it’s the cinnamon that I don’t like? I hate cinnamon. Then Mike had a theory: What if it was waffled? I love waffles.

So we made vanilla French Toast Waffles without cinnamon. Here’s what happened:

Operation “waffle all the things” is off to a delicious start

Fresh out of the waffle iron box!

Knowing that waffles are my favorite thing, my boyfriend Mike got me this waffle iron (surprisingly, not this waffle iron) as a present for our six month anniversary. We have since made waffles, and they were good.

Then we wondered, what other things can we make on a waffle iron?

In our quest to become the world’s foremost waffle iron chefs (okay, I might be overstating things a bit) we have started scheming up waffle iron recipe plans. And this morning we executed our first masterpiece…

The Waffled Egg Melt (aka. the “diet waffled egg melt”) (warning: this is not diet in any way)…

My 12 minute easy pasta recipe with the best pasta cooker ever

easy 10 minute pasta

You know… I only make two meals. One is Jessica’s kale salad, detailed here. The other is a delicious pasta that I made one night when I only had spaghetti, a bag of frozen peas, and some parmesan cheese on hand.

So I texted Jessica to ask her if those ingredients could make a meal. She was all, sure! And told me all the ingredients I’d need. Over the months I’ve been making this, I’ve perfected the recipe and the timing (thanks to my favorite pasta maker thingy), and now I can have my favorite pasta dish in about 12 minutes…

Stop everything: You can buy a 1lb bag of JUST cherry Starbursts

Holy shit balls! I just found out that Amazon sells one pound bags of JUST the best kind of Starbursts — the cherry kind.

$15 for an entire bag of my favorite flavor? My mouth is salivating, and my teeth are aching at the thought.

It’s not just cherry though, they have all the kinds of Starbursts available by the pound. I’m not sure why the Strawberry is more expensive than the cherry. Clearly, cherry is the best. Also, not surprisingly, the lemon is the cheapest. Ew. What the hell is someone gonna do with just the lemons? Torture someone? Probably torture someone.

Okay, go back to whatever you were doing, I’ll just stare at this Amazon page and have an internal struggle with myself.

The best damn grind and brew coffee maker (and coffee beans) on Earth

Years ago I was gifted an awesome coffee maker for Christmas. My family will never forget the moment I opened the wrapping, hugged the box, and exclaimed “It grinds AND it brews!” Well, seven years later that coffee maker died on me. It had been giving me warning signs of its impeding demise — stopping mid-brew, refusing to turn on, etc. — then one day I woke up, and my coffee maker didn’t.

Yup, it was sad day in the Finley household. That coffee maker had been with me for a long time. But it was time for a new one. And oh boy did I find a spectacular replacement!

See, it’s important to me to have a coffee maker that grinds and brews because I always buy my favorite coffee beans in a big ol’ bag, and I really don’t want to grind them all myself. So I asked my father, the patron saint of Consumer Reports, to do some research for me, and his results told him that the by far the best grind and brew was this guy: Cuisinart DGB-700BC Grind-and-Brew. Then he found it on sale on Amazon, from $305 to $135!

So I Amazon Primed that fucker, and had it in my shake-y caffeine-withdrawing hands in two days.

I was delighted to find that this coffee maker has a bin on top that stores half a pound (plus a little more) of coffee beans! That means I can store more beans in my air-tight container and in my coffee maker, and have fewer bags of coffee taking up space in my freezer!

Then you set the number of cups of coffee you’re making, and the machine knows how many beans to grind! Like a god-damned wizard.

This coffee maker also lets you set the strength of your coffee — mild, medium, and strong. And strong is STRONG. I love it!

I’ve been using it for a week and I’m still playing with the settings, but so far this grind and brew coffee maker is helping me forget all about the loss of my old one. (Update: It’s now been three years and I’m still just as in love with it as ever.)

If you’re looking for a grind and brew, get thee to Amazon. Now who wants to hear about my new toaster?
