My favorite photo from my birthday weekend.

My favorite photo from my birthday weekend.

My 33rd birthday is tomorrow. I don’t have any “big plans.” Last year, post-disappointing-turn-out-birthday-party, I decided that I was not going to attempt any big birthday party plans again until I turn 42 (the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life).

But I have been having mini celebrations with friends throughout the weekend. This will be a boring round-up of activities that will probably only be interesting to me. But it’s mah burfday so indulge me…

Childhood nostalgia and dessert party

Girly Empire Records birthday nightIt all started when Kimmy (of making me a bridesmaid fame) wanted to go see Empire Records at the Hollywood Forever outdoor movie screening. We couldn’t get tickets, so I suggested we do a screening at home — well, at Jessica’s home (of weekly Poodle Dinners fame). So that’s what we did! But the girls turned it into a birthday celebration by hooking me up with my favorite dessert: the Courtesan au Chocolat from the movie The Grand Budapest Hotel. GAH! So great. And the pastel icing perfectly matched my new pastel purple hair.

Crashing a party #1

I'm wanted at the Groundlings under a different nameThe next night I went out to see my friend Matt‘s opening night of the Groundlings’ Sunday Company. It was a great night, complete with a party afterwards. I got wine-drunk with Ken and my friend Brittany’s mom.

Then the week progressed and I worked my ass off getting two weeks worth of Empire posts ready so that Aaron and I can take our first real/non-working vacation together in five years. Then the mini celebrations picked up again on Friday…

Mid-day drinking and movie party

Guardians of the Galaxy with DrewDrew and I went to see Guardians of the Galaxy on the opening day. And with that Rocket Raccoon became my favorite Marvel character of all time. Holy crap, he makes me want to start reading comics. Anyway, Guardians of the Galaxy is amazing, you should see it. Preferably the way I did with Drew… with drinks beforehand and the Arclight bar.

Crashing a party #2

Then I got to be Ken’s +1 at the Gravity Falls premier party. I had a freaking blast, and definitely drank to much. But before I stopped remembering things (right around the time I said goodbye to my friends — sorry if I was a fucking dumbass, y’all!) I took a bunch of really fun photos with the aforementioned Matt, Brittany, and Ken…

That guy right there, Ken… holy crap, y’all. He should win a best friend award. Is there such thing? There should be. And it should be invented for him. Ken fucking Napzok had to cart my drunk ass home, even that guy I married didn’t want to deal with me when I called him at 2am and told him I was too drunk to get myself home. I won’t go into the details because they’re extra-special-embarassing. But suffice it to say that we’ve reached the “holding your hair back” friendship milestone. Yeesh.

The early birthday party

Screen Shot 2014-08-03 at 5.48.04 PMAaron and I decided to celebrate my birthday a day early, since he’ll be working all day tomorrow. Right now he’s working on some secret gift in the living room, and then we’re heading out on foot for some secret plan later tonight.

In the meantime, I’m set up in the bedroom alternating between napping with the dogs and reading an excellent book. At one point Aaron made sure to come back to the bedroom to open the windows so that I could hear and smell the summer rain.

It’s been a series of really great days and plans with my really great friends. I may abandon the idea of “one big birthday bash” completely and forever. I’d rather trade that for spending some one-on-one quality time with the people I love.

Oh! And I had the realization that Instagram has pretty much taken the place of my personal blogging. So if you want to keep up to date with what I’m doing, you should follow me over there: @meggyfin
