This is straight up REAL

So I got an email from another Flickr member, Madam Bizarro with the subject “stolen photo” which read:

Megan–you might wanna bust this guy.

[insert now defunct link to a photo in Lightko Studio's facebook portfolio]

Took one of your photos of Aaron’s bite and claimed it is his special effects make-up. Yeah, dude, I guess it DOES look real, since it IS.

And sure enough, I clicked over and saw this: (WARNING: If you don’t want to see the inside of my husband’s leg, do NOT read any further.)

“I just found out that I can’t dance like James Brown due to being bitten by a shark. However, had I not been bitten by a shark, I still wouldn’t be able to dance like James brown.” -Aaron

Aaron said this as we were preparing to go to a friend’s wedding. (Congrats Robin and John!) He had just watched an old video of James Brown going over some dance moves. He could do one if he lead with his good leg, but when attempting the same move on his shark leg … it wasn’t pretty. In fact, it was pretty sad to see Aaron’s face completely fall when he realized that his shark leg had destroyed all of his James Brown dancing dreams. Poor baby!

Made only worse/more awesome when the groom executed the move FLAWLESSLY on the dance floor at the reception. (Go John!)

Now here’s a pretty cute picture of us at the wedding:

LOL Shark

My friend Alex just emailed me this photo from a blog called FUCK YA SHARKS

Can’t argue with that. Except that Aaron hates Starbucks.
But anyway, how weird is that!? Aaron’s on the same level now as an LOL Cat.

The 1st Annual Attackiversary!

A year ago today (October 29th) Aaron was attacked by a tiger shark in Wailea Beach, Maui and survived! In honor of the attackiversary my friend Courtney and I threw Aaron a party! We made him a cake and invited a bunch of our friends over to celebrate.
As for the cake, we thought it would be funny to make one in the shape of a shark out of red velvet cake so that it would be like you were eating a shark. But that was too hard and so we ended up with this…
Happy Attackiversary!
Then we had a fun shark attack photo shoot…

Then it was just drinks and hanging out with everyone taking a moment to enjoy the fact that Aaron didn’t die a year ago today. :)

HAPPY ATTACKIVERSARY TO MY DARLING HUSBAND!!!

"Shark-Bitten, Love Smitten"

My friend Drew wrote an article about our little run-in with a shark that resulted in us getting engaged…

Shark Bite: A Love Story

Too close to home…

I found out about the fatal shark attack in San Diego today when I got a phone call from a reporter at CBS wanting to get Aaron’s reaction to the whole thing. Apparently the reporter showed up with a news van at our apartment building this morning, but Aaron and I weren’t home.
I found out from her that 66-year-old Dave Martin was swimming 150 feet from shore, training for a triathalon, when he was attacked by a great white. Apparently the shark bit into both of his legs. There are so man similarities between his story and Aaron’s that it’s off-putting to say the least, like the distance and the area of attack. But something else she told me really got to me on a disturbing level. Apparently the great white bit into Dave Martin’s femoral artery causing him to bleed out rapidly and ultimately causing his death.

I don’t often share with people, mostly because sometimes it’s too scary to even think about, but if Aaron’s “puka” (what we call the puncture wound near his knee) missed severing his femoral artery by just 1 inch.
One of the articles was accompanied by this picture of a despondant relative of the victim…

This picture tears me up inside in ways I can’t even begin to explain. This picture seriously could have been me 6 months ago. And believe me, it’s a nightmare that plays out in my head more often than I’d like to admit. Almost every night before I fall asleep I re-live the shark attack, and often times my mind takes me on the “what if it had been worse” journey. I would imagine there would have been a picture taken of me that looked a lot like this one. And every part of me wants to reach out to her and the other members of his family to tell them that I am soooo sorry. I know how shocked and scared and vulnerable and confused and angry they’re feeling. And it sucks. I’m sorry i can’t be more poetic than that right now. It just plain fucking sucks. Even with my loved one safe at home I still have nightmares and bouts of depression over the attack. I can’t even imagine what it will be like for his loved ones.
Well, that’s all I can take for right now. I just had to get this off my chest. Once again my heart goes out to Dave Martin and his family. He seemed like an amazing guy, and in fact, if you look into it, it seems that most shark attack victims are very special people.

Shark-a-thon @ Largo

A few days after we got back to LA from Maui, Aaron’s boss and friends at Largo threw him a benefit show to help pay the HUGE medical bills.

December 1st 2007 will now always be known as the most amazing night of our lives-

(All of these photos were taken by the amazing Ellen Tunney.)

Griffee and his shark. photo by Ellen Tunney

Michael Griffee not only created this life size tiger shark masterpiece for the show, but he also sang his ass off for the first time on the Largo stage!!! He sang Hall & Oats “Maneater!”

(Oh-oh, here she comes) Watch out boy she’ll chew you up
(Oh-oh, here she comes) She’s a maneater
(Oh-oh, here she comes) Watch out boy she’ll chew you up
(Oh-oh, here she comes) She’s a maneater
I wouldn’t if I were you
I know what she can do
She’s deadly man, she could really rip your world apart
Mind over matter
Ooh, the beauty is there but a beast is in the heart

And Dave “Gruber” Allen who has rapidly become one of my favorite people on earth, was the host for the evening.

“I GOT YOUR BACK, BRO”
by Dave “Gruber” Allen

Hey Shark! What’s your deal?
Picking on my friend, Aaron?
Get a life, fish. Fuck.

This one is amazing because the title is even an haiku!…

“WHAT I WOULD HAVE DONE
(WHERE I ATTACKED BY A SHARK
WHILE IN HA-WA-II)”
by David “Gruber” Allen

Some freak fish bites me?
I’d go POW! BOOM! in it’s face
Yea, NOW what, shark-hole?

See what I mean about the brilliant?

Paul F. Tompkins. photo by Ellen Tunney.

Continuing the funny was Paul F Tompkins who made us laugh so hard my stomach was sore for 3 freaking days!!! Apparently now PFT has an entire shark bit added to his act because of this. And I wish I could remember some of it but I can’t! I was too busy laughing that it’s all a blur.

And of course there was this guy…

Jon Brion w his ukulele. photo by Ellen Tunney

Jon Brion opened his set playing the ukulele in the Hawaiian tradition. :)

Jon Brion and Benmont Tench. photo by Ellen Tunney

This was Aaron’s favorite moment of the show. Benmont and Jon both hammered out a song together on the piano, it was beautiful and fun at the same time.

Auctioneers Gruber and Griffee. photo by Ellen Tunney

Between acts both Michael and Gruber surprised us by holding auctions! They auctioned off things like dvds of Jaws and Deep Blue Sea, to really special items like bar taps from the Largo bar signed by all of the staff and performers! It was so touching, we were both in tears several times during the auctioning.

They even auctioned off Griffee’s shark which made us sad because we wanted to bring her home. :(

After the show everyone wanted to hear about the shark attack story, including Jon!

Aaron telling Jon the shark story.

Anyway, the Shark-a-thon was the most amazing experience that not only raised a lot of money for the medical bills, but also gave Aaron an idea of how much he means to his friends and co-workers, which completely took him by surprise.

Aaron’s shark attack NEWS CLIPS

Here are some of the news clips from Aaron’s shark attack.
I wanted a place to store all of them, and also make it easier for people to find the news stories.

A month after the shark attack the Maui news did a special report on Aaron’s doctor- Dr Peter Galpin. (Aaron was his 9th shark attack victim.) This video is cool because it has some pictures of Aaron’s wound that we hadn’t seen before.

I’ll add more videos to this as I find them, and if you out there in blogland see clips that I haven’t please do me a favor and send them to me!

muchos gracias amigos.

Aaron’s Shark Attack!

Okay everyone, here it is in all it’s gory goodness… THE SHARK ATTACK BLOG!!!!

But before I get to all the bloody stuff, I’m going to bore you with some vacation photos…

Day 1: Arrive in Maui and party!

This picture is scary because of the foreshadowing, Here we are at the Four Seasons on our first day in Hawaii. We decided to have drinks at the Four Seasons while we were waiting to check into our condo…

little did we know...

Look how happy and drunk and bipedal we both were!

Crazy foreshadowing… right behind my right shoulder (your left) is where Aaron would be attacked by a shark two days later!

Day 2: My cousins took us out on their boat to swim with the turtles.

mike's boat

A view of my cousin's boat from the water.

Later on Aaron would say that this day made his shark bite all worth it. He would have gotten attacked all over again just to be able to have the amazing experiences we did this day.
