THE MOST HORRIFICALLY AWESOME BOSS EVARRRRRRR

I went searching in The Funk archives for a post and stumbled upon an old draft (title included) containing a NSFW work conversation between Ariel and myself that I never published back in 2012. Maybe for obvious reasons? But I feel like it’s a good time to dust this one off and enjoy it…

Why now? Because, after almost a decade working for The Offbeat Empire (I started before it was a tongue-in-cheek Empire, just Offbeat Bride), I am finally leaving the loving arms of my boss and close friend Ariel Meadow Stallings.

The weird thing is, I don’t actually have any other job I’m switching to. It’s just that, after almost ten years, and only working part-time now, it felt like time to move on and see what else is out there for me.

It’s exciting, but mostly terrifying. I barely remember what life was like before The Empire. And the little I do remember, work-wise, was bleak. But then I remember that blogging wasn’t even a job when I was growing up. And I had no idea that my perfect career could even be a career when I graduated college. So who knows what will happen next, my next job may not even be A Thing yet.

Actually wait no, it’s mostly sad at this moment…

I’m wonderfully not leaving the Empire because of any negativity at all. In fact a large part of what was keeping me there was the fun social aspect. I’m sad that I’m not going to be involved with the hardcore community of Offbeat Empire readers, and that I’m going to miss out on ridiculous work conversations like this one that I never posted back in 2012:

GeekWire fails and Rock Box wins this time in Seattle

So here I sit at the Africa Lounge in the SEATAC airport on a FOUR HOUR flight delay. All my work has been done and I find myself with a rare moment to blog a *gasp* personal blog! Also, I’m not good at sitting quietly by myself, I need something to do. And, in honor of yet another geeky time in Seattle, I will fill it with doing something nerdy like blogging.

Yes, I came to Seattle, once again, with a strictly geek purpose in mind. This time Ariel, Stephanie and I teamed up to attend the GeekWire Gala. Honestly, Stephanie and I flew our asses out to Seattle in the midst of the holiday shuffle for the sole purpose of experiencing what the “4 reasons to go to the GeekWire holiday gala” email described “as a full scale mock up of a mos eisley spaceport cantina bar, complete with star wars aliens.” Who WOULDN’T fly … well … ANYWHERE to experience that. Hell, I even bought mahself an spacey new dress for that particular experience. But when we got there… there was no such thing. Not even close. Basically, at some point between booking our tickets and the actual party the “full scale replica” had been downgraded to “Catina bar-inspired lounge.” Which basically meant, a black couch and a glass coffee table. hmmmmm… Total Fail.

BUT! The trip wasn’t a total bust. There was fun photo booth action with Star Wars characters. And obviously I got to spend some awesome time with my amazing co-workers/friends, Ariel and Stephanie and had a blast doing this…

Thirtyfabulous

No time for a full-on post about my birthday weekend. It suffices to say that my birthday party was incredible, followed by a weekend at Meadowfabulous that was almost life changing.

Real quick: Meadowfabulous is a weekend of camping at Ariel’s mom’s commune on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

To tide you over until I can possibly one day find the time to write more about my experiences this past weekend (spoiler: I made a salad from SCRATCH — life changing), here is a Flickr slideshow from Meadowfab:

no ties allowed?

I clearly have no time to blog about anything that takes much time. So here’s another silly conversation with one of my friends that only Star Wars NERDS will love as much as I:

Ariel: ok,
so
uh
Nadia & Dale’s wookiee boogie, TIE fighting, Star Wars wedding
I don’t get that title.
TIE fighting?
I just realized that I was like “Buh? what does that even mean?”
like, they had a tie?
no ties allowed?
wearing ties?
battling to the death, but they tied?
why the caps?
Can I just make it “Nadia & Dale’s wookiee boogie Star Wars wedding”
?
me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TIE_fighter
Ariel: oh.
I suck.

me: i’m STILL laughing
omg, can i blog that!?
Ariel: Sure.
I’m not above being mocked

Call me “Cupcake”

So I finally did it! I bleached my hair and dyed it pink. I’ve been wanting to do this since I was fifteen-years-old but there was always a reason to not do it.

  • I would have gotten my ass beat by my parents.
  • My parents would have killed me.
  • I wasn’t brave enough.
  • Then there were work reasons.
  • Then I had wanted long wavy hippie hair for the wedding.
  • And then there was no reason.

No reason not to do it! Except for the fact that it might be weird since my boss also has pink hair (well, half pink hair). So I decided, I’ll take it step-by-step and just bleach my hair at first — you know, go for a white blonde look for a while and then eventually make the move towards pink.

Seattle here we come!

seattle

We bought our tickets to Seattle last night and I’m super excited! Aaron and I will be going with our neighbor/amazing friend Coco. We call it our first “Finley-quist” family vacation. (Coco puts the “quist” in “Finley-quist.”)

I’ve never been to Seattle before, but a know a shit-ton of people who live there, including my “boss” — yes BOSS, I got an offbeat promotionAriel. And I’m super excited to see her again, but this time in her massively prego stage. The last (and first) time I saw her she had just begun her pregnancy and was barely showing.

The reason for our trip is this thing called the Glitter Sale. Apparently for two days in November, the Goodwill in Seattle puts out all their amazing glitzy and glamorous clothes, shoes and jewelry. Coco goes every year and gets some amazing formalwear to show-off at all her holiday parties. And these clothes are usually sparkly and amazing and all on the cheap, since it’s Goodwill. So, this year I shall accompany her and see what I can find. 🙂

Anyone who I know in the Seattle area is more than welcome to join us. I believe we shall be arriving early and camping out for the opening. I haven’t done that since… well, I’ve never done that. So it’ll be cool to have as much company as possible.
