Fiji — Days 4 and 5: Mana Island

I’m now on a small island called Mana island. I’m staying in the honeymoon suite which is freaking amazing, but it’s also pretty sad at the same time — I miss Aaron a lot. He’s LOVE this room because it has it’s own private beach. Fortunately the sun came out for a minute yesterday and I got to go into the ocean for the first (and probably only) time since I’ve been in Fiji.

Fiji — day 3: the Intercontinental spa and hotel

Here’s some video from when I first arrived at the Intercontinental hotel and spa. Or as I like to think of it… Fiji redemption. It was the day everything changed for the better and I started to have a good time…

Internet has been hard to come by here, so I’ll be doing bigger write-ups later.

Bula from Fiji!

crappy cell phone pic of me in Fiji.

“Bula” (hi) from the future — It’s early Monday morning of day three of my Fiji trip. It’s overcast again and I can see storm clouds in the distance, but the rain hasn’t started yet. It has both literally and figuratively been raining on my parade in Fiji — from the wet season starting the day I arrived, to the negative comments over on OBB, to the mass confusion leading to a very stressful time. I know I should be blogging this trip more, but so far not much has happened and what has happened has been kinda’ lame.

Last night a Tourism Fiji rep came to my aid and took me out to dinner with her and her adorable fiance and we talked weddings and had drinks. And today that same woman is helping to get me a universal card reader (yes, the one I forgot to bring) and so you can be expecting a LOT more photos from me.

But now I’m off to a meeting…

Worst. Hotel. Experience. EVAR. (or “Metro Hotel and Crazy Pants”)

This past weekend Coco and I traveled to Sonoma for a wedding, but I decided to splurge a little and treat me and my assistant to a little mini vacation — a relaxing stay at a “cute” hotel. Unfortunately my choosing the Metro Hotel and Cafe in Petaluma was the WORST mistake I could have possibly made. From the website it looked like a funky kitschy hostel-type place. Shame on me for mistaking “BAT-SHIT CRAZY” with “kitschy.”

Upon checking in to the hotel I was told by the guy behind the desk that they had just “changed their computer system” so I would now have to give him cash for the room that I had already paid for online two days prior. I laughed because I thought he was joking. Then he insisted again that I give him cash (totaling almost $300 for two nights!!!) and when I asked, “Wait, are you joking?,” he responded, “No, I’m Russian.” Clearly thinking then that it was all joke I proceeded to ask him where my room was and he proceeded to ask me for cash again. When I told him, confused and getting very frustrated at this point, that I can’t get the money even if my credit card was refunded, I just don’t carry around wads of cash, and I guess that I should just leave? He then gave up and showed us to the room saying something about how he would just take care of it somehow.

Immediately upon getting to the room I looked up my bank statements and no, the money had not been refunded — it wasn’t even pending! And yes, it seems that this guy had totally tried to scam me. NOT the way to welcome a guests to your hotel. Coco and I were immediately stressed and concerned about the type of people who run this place. Needless to say whenever we left our room we took all of our expensive belongings with us. Shady shady goings on.

Ah but the crazy continues!…

Reason #387 why I love Maui

Perhaps I should explain how we got to do that awesome photo shoot that I just blogged about with one of the best wedding photographers on Maui…

David and Aaron "surfing" in Maui.

The biggest reason why I love Maui so much is that every time I go there I meet at least ONE incredible person who changes my life in one way or another. But this trip was unique because the person I met on Maui wasn’t on Maui yet when I met him…

It started on the plane ride out there. That was awful at the time and funny to me now. I sat down at my window seat (I like to have a window seat when I fly too Maui so that I can see the beautiful island as I ask it for permission to land) and then another woman sat in the aisle seat and no one was in the middle, so that was a blessing! I was pretty excited.

And then a family of four (two adults and two kids) sat down in the three seats behind me. Screwed. Immediately the kids started screaming, I mean top of their lungs just screaming to make noise. After the first five screams it became clear that the parents had NO intention of stopping their kids from behaving like that. Awesome.

And then the woman to my right starts doing this horrible deep cough that just gave me the wiggins. I hoped that it was a one time, something was stuck in her throat, kinda thing. But no — it happened over and over again. I’m telling you that sound is not even anything I can attempt to describe. Just know that it gave me chills and made me nauseous every time i heard it.

And then the children’s screaming turned into screaming AND kicking and that’s when I lost my shit. I thought there is NO WAY that I can put up with this for four more hours. So I packed up all of my shit and said excuse me to the hoarker sitting next to me and then made my way to the back of the plane cruising for an open seat.

That’s when I saw this guy who looked about my age, and like he probably lived on the islands, sitting in a window seat with the rest of his row available. I asked if I could sit in the aisle seat because I was about to beat the shit out of a little kid and he said, “Sure!” And let me tell you, first class wouldn’t have felt as luxurious as that little quiet aisle seat felt. I was immediately happy and de-stressed. I watched the movie with a blissed out smile on my face, happy all the way to Maui.

While in my little happy seat, I went about my business editing wedding photos and that’s when he leaned over and asked if I was a wedding photographer. I told him that I was and he told me that his wife was a wedding photographer on Maui! This opened up all kinds of conversations, I learned that his name was David, he’s a kick-ass graphic designer, and he and his wife Jana had just moved to Maui from Oahu, and that he had just spent the week in San Francisco, so we were in the bay area at the same time.

Anyway, because of that chance meeting on the plane to Maui, we made two new awesome friends (seriously, look how freaking cute they are) who let us do a fun photo shoot and then taught us to surf. We can’t wait to get back to Maui and hang with them some more, and the next time I *will* stand all the way up on that damn board!

The Finleys in Maui by Jana Morgan Photography

OMG OMG OMG guys… our new friend and the most AMAZING Maui wedding photographer, Jana Morgan, just posted a blog full of funky Finley photos. I lerve them so much, and she somehow made us look NOT AWKWARD! I’m convinced she some kind of wizard…

To check out the rest of the photos head over to Jana’s website and be sure to leave her some blog love — she did us both a HUGE favor by putting up with our awkward mugs.

Misadventures in travel wedding photography

Coco and me in the car.

I was hired to shoot a wedding in San Francisco last weeked. The drive to the bay area went swimmingly. Before I left I swung by Samy’s camera to pick up my Canon 50D that errored out on me during my first wedding and I was a happy camper with my camera back, my best friend and second shooter by my side and everything looking up.

Coco and I stayed the night at a friend’s place in San Jose. We went out to dinner. I had two margaritas and got trashed. And when we got back from the restaurant my shoe broke! The sole of my black boots just came off completely. And then it was all downhill from there…

My 13-yr-old self’s dream come true!

At the 4 Seasons bar with the drink flowers in my hair.

I love having pink hair. I got to meet Adam Sandler yesterday because of it! And he actually flagged ME down to get MY attention. Holy cow! I never thought THAT would happen. For those of you that don’t know, Adam Sandler was my first REAL BIG celebrity crush. I think I created the first “best of [name your individual SNL actor]” video when I would watch SNL with a remote control in my hand, blank tape in the VCR and hit record as soon as I saw him on screen. I still have that VHS tape with tons of Adam Sandler clips with missing beginnings.

Anywhoo…

We were having Lahaina Lemonades at the Four Seasons before we headed down to the shark attack beach. My mother, Shanon and I were sitting at the bar in my favorite outdoor restuarant when Adam Sandler and his daughter came in. Wow! Okay that’s cool. Got a little thrill. Anyway, go about my business… the business of getting drunk off my favorite mixed drink. When all of a sudden, out of the corner of my eye, I see Adam waving his hand. I look over wondering if he’s asking me to get the bartender’s attention when he yells, “You’ve got a big fan of your hair over here!” And he points to his daughter. AW! And so we continue a little yelling thing back and forth for a second and then it’s done. WOW! That was cool!!!!

Then, the entire time we’re seated at the bar, I notice that his daughter keeps staring at me, like kids often do with my pink hair. So I start making faces and messing around with her. So I made her a flower thingy for her hair out of our pretty drink flowers and an olive stabber and went over to present it to her. She’s shy of course, but Adam is MORE than enthused to see me approach. As I walked up to his table he said, “Wow Sadie! Look who’s coming to say hi!” I never in a MILLION years would have thought that Adam Sandler would be excited to see me. Life’s funny.

I gave her the flowers and then Adam asked me to tell her how I made my hair pink. And then he shook my hand and said thanks for coming over, “she talked about your hair for like 15 minutes.” Wow. Adam Sandler had a conversation about ME for 15 minutes. Seriously.

The 13 year old girl in me was SQUEEEEEEEEEing in her pants even though I was playing it cool. Almost too cool. I kinda wish that I had asked for a picture with the both of them. But the memory is good enough for me. I love that Maui makes things like that possible.

Here’s a picture of Adam and his daughter. How freaking cute is she!?…

Best road trip EVAR circa 2006

I found this old blog post that never got posted. I thought I’d resurrect it and post it now. Oh we were so young and in love back then. This was year two of our relationship, by the way.

“It winds from Chicago to LA, more than 2,000 miles all the way”… yup, Aaron and I took a Route 66 road trip and it was awesome! I flew to Indiana on New Years Eve and then drove w him from there to Oklahoma (where is family lives) and then from Oklahoma back to LA.
