Because… internet, costumes, drinks, and HODOR!

because costumesRemember last year when I went to an internet-themed party and paid tribute to my favorite expression on the interwebs “X ALL THE Y!” I use that phrasing all the time in my writing, so it made sense that I should celebrate by cosplaying as Ali Brosh’s comic of herself. Well, this past weekend was round two of the “Children of the Internet” — the birthday party for my friend Brittany. And I had to stop and think “which internet expression do I want to celebrate this year?”

Of course! My favorite thing to happen to grammar, because internet.

because internet costume

But I couldn’t chose which word I would use as the noun… because internet? Because Brittany? Because nerds? Because party? So I decided to just write “because” and bring a flipbook of options. Which came in handy when I met one huge nerd celebrity…

Targaryen hair achieved, just not in the way I was thinking…

I fucking LOVED this comment on Offbeat Home’s facebook page

Screen Shot 2014-05-20 at 1.15.05 PM

I was totally going for Targaryen hair, thinking more “Daenerys Targaryen” or “Khaleesi hair” as Aaron calls it, but… Yeah, I can see it.

viserys targaryen hair

Still… Targaryen hair achievement unlocked!

Clive Badger and Fantastic Mr Fox cosplay

fantastic mr fox cosplay

I wanted to take a minute to show off my latest nerd party cosplay. (Would you call this cosplay or costuming? What’s the difference? I feel like it’s not “professional” enough to be cosplay, but I definitely put a lot of effort into each look. Anyway…)

Last time I was Allie from Hyperbole and a Half, at the Meme Party. This time my friend Ken and I were the kick-ass team of Fantastic Mr. Fox and Clive Badger for our mutual friend Matt’s Bill Murray Party.

Here are some pics of us from the night…

New new cartoon-inspired hair

before hair cut

before hair cut

I’ve been dying to cut my hair for a while. But I kept it long for costume purposes, and then for Maui purposes (it’s easier to put up when it’s long). But I finally had no reason to keep my hair long. And with the temperatures in LA hitting the high 80s and 90s, I couldn’t wait to chop this shit off.

So I showed my hair stylist a freaking cartoon hair style that I really love and she did her best to re-create it…

Children of the Internet Party: SHARE ALL THE PHOTOS!

Ready to clean all the things! And celebrate all the Internet! At tonight's #memeparty
I’m still too drained for the amazing time I had this weekend attending Britney’s “children of the internet” birthday party. So I’m just going to dump a bunch of party photos here.

We all dressed up like internet memes. I had to pay homage to Hyperbole and a Half because I use “X all the Y” in a lot of my writing.

Scroll through and see how any other memes you can recognize…

Even octipodes love old school Nintendo: VIP fun at the iam8bit art gallery

Untitled

I remember years ago, when I was still in college, my cousin and a his friend Drew came to LA for a visit. (It was the first time I met Drew and I totally thought “holy crap this guy is cute.”) While at lunch they told me that they had just stopped by an art gallery that was featuring 8bit and video game-themed art. I remember being SUPER jealous that they didn’t invite me to said gallery.

Yesterday, probably seven years later(?), I got a chance to go to that art gallery with Drew (who is now a really close friend, as chances of us ever dating were quite slim once I found out he was gay). Drew even got us VIP status at the iam8bit opening night event. Because of that, we bypassed standing in any lines and had a blast.

Though sadly that also meant we didn’t stand in line to have our picture taken in the life-size (yet still scaled down) plushie version of Scrooge McDuck’s money vault. Once Drew referred to it as something like “the germ-filled pit of sweaty pillows” I kinda lost my motivation to stand in a long line, in a super-hot room to wade around in gross pillow coins for a photo op. Is it weird that I kind of regret it now?

But here are the pictures that I did get:

In which I proceed to drink whiskey and talk about myself

Ken and me. Not pictured: lots of whiskey

Ken and me. Not pictured: lots of whiskey

Ever wanted to know more about me? Including how I got my job at Offbeat Bride, dating a rocket scientist, being friend-dumped on the trolley tracks at the Grove, how I became a “legitimate geek girl,” and what it was like growing up in LA… now you can! And it’s all on the episode of the Napzok Files that made former radio host Ken Napzok ditch his professional broadcasting standards.

Click here to listen to the podcast that made Aaron say “I won the World Series of Megan.” (Fun fact: I have barely any memory of the last 10 minutes of the show!)

Let’s talk about Game of Thrones!

Tiffany as the bear, and Ethan as the brave Jamie Lannister to my scared Brienne.

I never thought there’d be a time when Glory from Buffy the Vampire Slayer would be taking MY picture as I hold a prop sword pretending to be scared of a girl pretending to be a bear. But that happened today when I visited Geek Nation‘s Game of Thrones Recap & Review Podcast, hosted by my friend Tiffany Smith.

Tiffany, her friend Ethan Newberry, and I talked all about last night’s episode of Game of Thrones. Including: boobies, butts, “pee pees,” torture, romance, and of course, BEARS!

My first time at Wondercon

My whole con outfit: cat dress, Han Solo boots, Tauntaun purse.

My whole con outfit: cat dress, Han Solo boots, Tauntaun purse.

I know this is late in coming, but I’ve been SLAMMED lately. So, a month, later: here’s my write up about Wondercon. For those of you who don’t know about it (which is probably most of my readers: hi family), Wondercon is like a mini Comic Con — ALL about comics. I was worried I wouldn’t have as much fun as I would at a more broader-focused geek convention since I know NADA about comics. You know, besides whatever Hollywood turns into blockbuster movies. But, since I was tagging along with a group of people whom I adore (the Schmoes Know gang) I wasn’t too worried too much.

Turns out, there was NO need to worry at all. I had a fucking BLAST. There’s just something about the energy of geek conventions that’s like a drug for me. I’m never more excitable and happy then I am when I’m with a HUGE grouping of people who are feeling comfortable being excitable and happy about dorky-ass-shit.

Things overheard at Wondercon:

No seriously guys, I have a SACK full of inhalers. U jealous @hodgman?

This is seriously one of the best gifts I’ve EVER gotten. Is that sad? Because I think it’s wonderful. Now how do I get these all on the plane? Is that even possible?

Ps. The next blog post will be full of photos from my time in Maui. I promise.
