3 Doors Down to Zac Brown

Yesterday I was helping Aaron with his resume by updating his “bands I have worked with” list. I found myself getting SUPER impressed with his street cred.
Just for kicks, here is the list of (almost) all the bands and artists that Aaron has either recorded or has done live sound for…

Pretty awesome, right? And if you’d ask Aaron who was his favorite band or artist to record out of all those choices, he’d enthusiastically, and surprisingly, tell you that it was Tom Jones.
Aaron’s favorite Tharpe girl

I love Aaron and he loves me, but I have a sneaking suspicion that his favorite Tharpe girl is NOT yours truly. I’m pretty sure he is far more in love with Sister Rosetta Tharpe. He just came clean to me and told me he spent the entire time that I was in Texas obsessing over this song…
And who can blame him? Sister Rosetta is by far THEE most bad ass Tharpe girl there ever was and ever will be.
As an interesting side note, Aaron’s hoping to get his Little Richard cover band Big Dick to do a version of this song of Sister Rosetta’s.

Write down the soundtrack of your year so far. Play it for someone who loves you.
Good timing! Coco and I were just talking last night about how she was cleaning out her itunes and discovering awesome old music. And I have nothing BUT old music to share! So yay. Here are some tunes that kept me and Coco company as we drove all over California to shoot weddings this year…
Lady Gaga — TELEPHONE: Coco and I could NOT take on a wedding without listening to this song and rocking out in the car beforehand.
What it’s like living with a musician/sound engineer – example #2

So Aaron’s not had a lot of work for AOL lately, which means he’s been working on his own projects… at home. So yesterday it was endless loops of Big Dick recordings and then today I found this little surprise when I went to the bathroom…

I guess the bathroom has better acoustics for recording than the living room? I have NO idea, but it was like WHOA when I opened the door.

I’m working in the bedroom (yes, in bed even) while Aaron is mixing something in the living room. This is a little glimpse of what it’s like to live with a sound engineer.
Turn up your speakers as loud as possible to REALLY get the effect (this video didn’t pick up the sound as well as I’d hoped).
The “Marilyn” of the Munsters

Aaron recorded a particularly difficult band today. Per usual, when he comes home from a tough day he makes me laugh as he recounts all the crazy shit that he’s had to deal with, and giving it his silly Aaron spin.
When he left for work this morning he referred to the band he was off to record as, “Hippie McGee and the Patchouli Oil Hacky Sack All-Star Club.” Later on in the day, after getting a look at the actual band members, the name changed to “Homeless Fred and the Anti-Antiperspirants.” Then, after having a hell of a time working with them, he changed the name, yet again to “Bush League Bob and the Slap Happy Half-Asses.” And once he got home to me their name was officially, “Bush League Bob and the Dipshits.”
But my favorite Aaron-snark was when he was telling me about this female accordion player who was the only easy person to work with. First of all, I love me a female accordion player. I also love one who is down to earth — the mic cut out on her during the recording process. He and his boss decided to call her in and have her re-record her entire part and then splice it in. But she listened to it, said, ‘Eh, my part doesn’t sound that great anyway. Feel free to cut it.’ Which was such a relief to both them, making her the best person of the day.
Or, as Aaron described her… “She was the “Marilyn” of the Munsters.”

Today my husband and I both said goodbye to our best friends and two band mates as they all left for three months to go on tour. It really sucks and we’re going to miss them a ton.
But if any of you out there are going to catch any of these shows try to say hi to our buddies for us…
The Airborn Toxic Event — say hi to the drummer, Daren, for us. He’s Aaron’s best friend and was best man our wedding.
The Henry Clay People (opening for Airborn) — say hi to Jonathan for us, I think he’s playing guitar? I don’t remember, anyway, he’s in our band The Californian.
Lenka — say hi to the bass player, Erik, and the guitar/keys player, John. Erik is my bestest friend and John is our lead singer of our band and one of my favorite people.
You can see my two buddies here with Lenka on last nights Jimmy Kimmel Live…
On the one hand, of course I’m happy for my friends making money doing what they love, becoming rock stars and such, on the other hand… I WANT MY FRIENDS BACK!!!

The new Kelly video is out and I, yet again, make an appearance. This time I even say words!!! Wow. I play a photographer, but i was actually taking photographs so I wasn’t really “playing” anything. I was just being me but on film and wearing something silly.
Please to enjoy: Where Do You Think You’re Going In That?
And here are some of the photos I was actually taking…

So I’m in a band, for the first time in my life. And I can’t think of a better band to be in than one with all my most favoritist people including my best friend and my fiance.
It’s called Blackbird Pie. It’s also really awesome. Here is the first song I ever sang live on stage with a band. I’m the one in the far right corner behind the cute girl in pink (Wendy).
Blackbird Pie is…
John Graney: Mandolin, lead vocals & creative genius
Erik Kertes: bass
Aaron Finley: drums
David Dyas: lap steel
Wendy Wang: guitar & vocals
Megan Tharpe: vocals & sample (“super-calculator”)
