Black Friday at Wertz Bros.

I swore that I would NEVER (ever ever ever) go shopping on Black Friday, but yesterday I broke that promise. But I went to Wertz Brother’s Antique Mart in Santa Monica, which really doesn’t count as “Black Friday” type shopping. Before I left, I attempted to get Aaron to come along, and when he asked me “what kind of stuff do they sell?” I realized that I didn’t really have a good answer — everything, and nothing really! So, I thought I’d document some of my favorite finds from my Black Friday at Wertz Bros…

This is my favorite booth at Wertz Bros, it’s usually filled with awesome mid-century modern furniture like this dining room table I wanted so bad. But it was gone today (not that I could afford it anyway).

But I did end up getting these funky hand-blown glasses from the booth instead — 7 of them for $45!

Wetz Bros deals with a lot of antique home-goods, so I often run into things I recognize from my own family — My mom has that same pewter duck tureen, it’s been in every one of our kitchens for as long as I can remember, and that china was my parent’s pattern when I was a kid.

But then there’s silly and insane shit like this…

Two super smiley glass hippos were sitting eye-level on a shelf. I literally turned to look to my right and burst out laughing.

Can I interest anyone in a booby lamp with no functional shade?

I sent this photo to my mom and told her that she needed to get this brass palm tree mirror for the Maui house. And it’s only $895!

There exists a guitar from 1984 that is covered in actual snake skin… not just a pattern that looks like snake skin! No no! I have included a close up so that you can see that this is actually a guitar covered in the skin of a snake… for $2200.

For some reason there is a tiny reenactment of the battles of Waterloo…

…and Gaul? And I’m not exactly sure if these are there to just look cute, or if someone could actually purchase these.

And who can’t use a bowl full of eight balls? Seriously, read the lable — “bowl full of 8 balls $95.00

And from the same person who brought you “bowl full of 8 balls,” here is a head in a bowl and two brooms? Also, this may be the creepiest photo I’ve ever taken.

I kind of fell in love with this little statue of “Mack.” The dog, presumably Mack, just looks so dern proud of himself. It’s cute. But wait, are you asking yourself “Is that a jar full of doll parts in the background?” Because you should be. And the answer…

Is yes, yes it is a jar full of doll parts.

Unfortunately, the dolls didn’t stop there. This totally not creepy thing was staring down at me from above.

Speaking of things staring down at me from above… here’s a taxidermied bird.
I always keep my miniature bust of JFK right next to my insanely oversized beakers.

Here’s a photo of Amy modeling a reproduction Mongolian helmet with a rack full of AMAZING vintage dresses that I had to really force myself not to take home.

And we ended our trip to Wertz Bros with Ari finding the world’s biggest lighter. Seriously.. wtfwhy?

I ended up not buying anything today, and Amy and Ari got a few good things including a jacket, a small copper sauce pot and a gift for one of our neighbors. So, you know, that jar full of doll parts is still available!
