Radvent: Remembering 2005

In an effort to encourage myself to blog more, I’ve decided to take part in OBB vendor and creative inspiration Princess Lasertron’s Radvent project this month.

What were you doing five years ago today? As the holiday season began? Where were you? Who were you with? What did you want? What did you have?

Strangely (or maybe not so?), my life five years ago was a LOT like Princess Lasertron (who is also a Megan IRL). Five years ago I was 25 and had just graduated college (yes, I was a tad late to the college game). Photography was still just a hobby, and in those days it was PURELY pictures of musicians and cars. And my journal at that time was just filled with page after page of the guy I was dating. See, I was supposed to head off to Australia for a few months on a work visa, but a speeding ticket ruined all my plans as it officially drained all the money I had saved for that trip. But it was okay! Because if I had gone to Australia, I would have not met the man who was to become my husband. Aaron and I met in August of 2005 and by the time the holidays came around we were already deeply in love.

According to my journal back then… My mom officially met Aaron early that November. And on this week in 2005 we had just had our first fight. A delve into where we were around the holidays finds me remembering that Aaron spent that Christmas at his parents house and me at mine. But he was on his super-best-most-romantic behavior back then and surprised me with a diamond bracelet that he left in my glove box. He called me Xmas day and said, “Check your glove box because I think i might have left a firewire cable from my boss in there.” And when I opened the glove box my present popped out. I had never been surprised like that before.

And for his 31st birthday (New Years) I flew out to meet him and meet his family for the first time. That was when we took our first road trip, which has now become a family tradition for us.

Even though I was totally happy and in love with my new man, 2005 was a rough year for me though… When college ended I freaked, I missed seeing my best friends every day when I practically lived with them at USC. There are tons of mentions of not seeing Erik and Oliver enough. And I had absolutely NO IDEA what I wanted to do for a living. I had majored in English so I just assumed that I should go into teaching. And I am SO thankful that that fell through. I know now that I would have not been happy.

So what did I do with a college degree from USC? I became a hostess at the Marmalade Cafe in the Farmers Market. It was easy and it was social and it allowed me time to read at the front desk and it allowed me to keep weird hours, left over from my days in college. But I was miserable. I felt like a total loser with no direction.

It’s funny that this should all come up now because I was just thinking the other day how I never thought that I would be a “blogger.” I had no freaking clue in the world that this would be an option for me. And I certainly never thought in a million years that people would actually pay me to take photos!

In 2005, all I knew was that I didn’t know… but I did know that I whatever I did was going to be awesome and it was going to be FUN. And with just that one positive thought, I somehow found my way to Offbeat Bride which lead to Megan Finley Photography.

I love that the Radvent project started with a question about 2005, because if you’re going to start anywhere when talking about my life today, it all really starts in 2005.
